Gait Analysis

Also known as: Gait Assessment, Walking Analysis

The systematic study of human locomotion using observation, measurement, and analysis of body mechanics during walking. Gait analysis measures parameters such as stride length, step duration, joint angles, stance and swing phase timing, and symmetry between left and right legs. Traditional gait analysis requires expensive optoelectronic camera systems in specialized laboratories, but wearable sensors like inertial measurement units are enabling portable, real-world gait assessment. Gait analysis is essential for fitting orthotic devices, planning rehabilitation, and monitoring the progression of conditions affecting mobility.
