Orthosis
Also known as: Orthotic, Orthotic Device, Brace
An externally applied medical device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system. Orthoses support, align, prevent, or correct deformities and improve the function of movable parts of the body. Common types include ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), knee orthoses, spinal orthoses, and wrist-hand orthoses. Unlike prostheses, which replace missing body parts, orthoses augment existing body structures. Proper fitting and tuning of orthoses is critical to their effectiveness and the user's comfort and mobility.
