LGBTQIA+

Also known as: LGBTQ+, LGBT, Queer Community

An acronym representing the diverse community of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual or agender, and other sexual orientations and gender identities indicated by the plus sign. In accessibility contexts, LGBTQIA+ identity intersects with disability in important ways — individuals who hold both identities face compounding marginalization, and research shows that social stigma around disability can be amplified in community spaces where people are already navigating identity-based discrimination. Understanding this intersection is essential for designing inclusive assistive technologies and accessible community environments that serve people with multiple marginalized identities.
