Assistive Technology Abandonment
Also known as: AT Abandonment, AT Non-Use, Device Abandonment
The phenomenon where people with disabilities stop using or choose not to use assistive technology devices that have been provided to them. Abandonment can result from multiple factors including poor device fit, discomfort, lack of training, cost of maintenance, social stigma associated with visible device use, and the technology not being suited to the user's actual activities or environments. Research shows that social context plays a significant role — individuals may avoid using AT in community settings to prevent standing out or drawing unwanted attention, particularly when they already face stigma related to other aspects of their identity. Addressing abandonment requires understanding the full social, economic, and practical context of AT use.
