Haptic Wearable

Also known as: Haptic Wearable Device, Wearable Haptic Technology

A body-worn electronic device that communicates information through touch sensations such as vibration, pressure, or temperature changes. In accessibility contexts, haptic wearables can serve as assistive technologies that convey information through tactile channels when visual or auditory channels are unavailable or already occupied. Applications include navigation aids for blind users that vibrate to indicate direction, musical haptic wearables that communicate musical cues to blind and low-vision musicians through vibrotactile patterns, and communication devices for deafblind individuals. Design considerations include comfort, breathability, discreteness in social settings, and the aesthetic qualities of materials used.
