Mild Disability

Also known as: Moderate Disability, Mild Impairment

A level of functional limitation that affects daily activities but does not completely prevent a person from performing tasks independently. People with mild disabilities often fall into a gap in accessibility support — their challenges are real and impactful but may not be severe enough to qualify for formal accommodations, specialized assistive technology, or medical intervention. This can lead to a complex relationship with disability identity, as individuals may not identify as disabled, may minimize their challenges relative to people with more severe disabilities, and may internalize struggles as personal failings rather than recognizing them as barriers created by inaccessible design. Research shows that technology users with mild disabilities experience distinct challenges from those with more acute needs, particularly around feature discoverability, identity, and social visibility.
