Nonverbal Learning Disorder
Also known as: NVLD, Nonverbal Learning Disability, NLD
A neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties with visual-spatial processing, motor coordination, and social skills, while verbal abilities are typically a relative strength. People with NVLD may struggle with interpreting visual information, understanding spatial relationships, recognizing patterns, and processing nonverbal social cues such as facial expressions and body language. Despite strong verbal and reading skills, they often have difficulty with mathematics, particularly geometry and word problems that require visual reasoning. In digital contexts, NVLD underscores the importance of providing text-based alternatives to visual representations and clear, explicit instructions rather than relying on spatial layout alone to convey meaning.
