Cultural Competence
Also known as: Cultural Competency, Cultural Responsiveness
The ability of service providers, organisations, and systems to effectively deliver services that meet the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of diverse populations. In accessibility and healthcare contexts, cultural competence involves understanding how cultural beliefs, communication styles, and stigma around disability vary across communities, and adapting services accordingly. This includes providing professional interpretation, translating materials accurately, building trust through community engagement, and recognising that concepts like "disability" and "mental health" carry different meanings and connotations across cultures.
