Fringe Vocabulary
Also known as: Fringe Words, Context-Specific Vocabulary
Topic-specific or situation-specific words in an AAC system, typically nouns and other content words that are needed in particular contexts but not used frequently across all conversations. Examples include words like "dinosaur" at a museum, "swing" at a playground, or "quesadilla" during cooking. Fringe vocabulary complements core vocabulary by providing the specific content words needed to communicate about particular activities, interests, or environments. A major challenge in AAC practice is that conversation partners must anticipate and pre-program fringe vocabulary, which is time-consuming and cannot cover unexpected situations — a problem that automated vocabulary generation from photographs aims to address.
