Cochlear Implant

Also known as: CI

A surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to individuals who are deaf or have severe hearing loss. Unlike hearing aids which amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the inner ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. The device consists of an external processor worn behind the ear and an internal implant. Cochlear implants are a significant assistive technology, though experiences and outcomes vary widely, and their use intersects with cultural perspectives within the Deaf community regarding identity and medical intervention.
