PDF Remediation
Also known as: PDF Tagging, PDF Accessibility Remediation, Document Remediation
The process of adding structural tags to an existing PDF document to make it accessible to assistive technologies such as screen readers. Remediation involves identifying logical content elements (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, images), assigning appropriate tags, establishing a correct reading order, and adding alternative text for non-text content. This process is distinct from creating accessible PDFs during authoring, as it can be applied to any existing PDF regardless of the software used to create it. PDF remediation is often time-consuming and requires specialized knowledge of accessibility standards like PDF/UA.
