Sign Language Interpretation

Also known as: Sign Language Interpreting, SLI

The process of conveying spoken or written language into a sign language (or vice versa) by a trained interpreter, enabling communication access for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. In digital media and immersive environments, sign language interpretation is typically provided through a picture-in-picture video overlay of a human interpreter, which is often more accessible than text captioning for native sign language users due to the significant grammatical differences between sign languages and written languages. Effective sign language interpretation in media must consider interpreter visibility, signing space, background contrast, and positioning relative to content.
