Makaton
A language programme that uses a combination of speech, signs (borrowed from British Sign Language), and graphic symbols to support communication for people who have difficulty with spoken language. Unlike BSL, which is a complete natural language with its own grammar, Makaton uses signs alongside spoken English in English word order, making it a form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) rather than an independent language. Makaton is widely used with children and adults who have learning disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, or other conditions affecting communication, and is commonly taught in schools and care settings across the UK and internationally.
