Daily Living Skills
Also known as: Activities of Daily Living, ADLs, Self-Care Skills
The fundamental self-care tasks that individuals perform routinely, including personal hygiene (tooth-brushing, hand-washing, bathing), dressing, eating, toileting, and basic household tasks. For individuals with disabilities, particularly autism and intellectual disabilities, learning daily living skills is a core focus of therapy and education. These skills are often broken down into sequential steps through task analysis and taught using strategies such as visual supports, video modeling, and prompting hierarchies. Mastery of daily living skills is critical for independence and quality of life.
