Medication Management
Also known as: Medication Adherence, Medication Compliance
The process of overseeing and managing the medications prescribed to an individual, including remembering to take medications at the correct times, in the correct doses, and tracking what has been taken. Medication management is a significant challenge for older adults and people with cognitive impairments, who may take multiple medications daily and struggle to remember whether they have already taken a dose. Poor medication adherence is a leading cause of emergency complications related to heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Assistive technologies for medication management include pill dispensers, smart pillboxes, phone alarms, conversational assistants, and caregiver notification systems.
