Cognitive Stimulation

Also known as: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, CST

A structured programme of activities and discussions designed to engage and stimulate cognitive abilities — including memory, attention, language, and problem-solving — in people with mild to moderate dementia. Cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) is one of the few non-pharmacological interventions with strong evidence of effectiveness for improving cognition and quality of life in people with dementia. Activities typically involve group discussions, word games, categorisation tasks, creative activities, and sensory experiences, delivered in a supportive social environment. The social aspect of group cognitive stimulation is considered as important as the cognitive exercises themselves, as social engagement helps slow the progression of dementia.
