Workspace Awareness

Also known as: Collaborator Awareness, Shared Workspace Awareness

The up-to-the-moment understanding of another person's interactions within a shared workspace, including their location, actions, and intentions. In collaborative software development, workspace awareness encompasses knowing which file a colleague is viewing, what line they are editing, and what changes they are making. Most collaboration tools convey workspace awareness through visual cues like colored cursors and highlighted selections, which are inaccessible to screen reader users. Making workspace awareness accessible requires alternative modalities such as sound effects, speech announcements, and haptic feedback.
