Reverse Dictionary
Also known as: Sign-to-English Dictionary, ASL-to-English Dictionary
A dictionary tool that allows users to search for the meaning of a sign language sign by inputting its visual or linguistic properties — such as handshape, location, movement, and orientation — rather than searching from a known English word. Reverse dictionaries address the fundamental challenge that sign languages lack a standard written form, making it impossible to use conventional alphabetical lookup. Current reverse dictionaries include feature-based search interfaces and webcam-based sign recognition systems, though both approaches have significant usability limitations for learners encountering unfamiliar signs.
