Intra-sectionality

Also known as: Intra-sectional Analysis

The examination of variation and diversity within a single identity category or demographic group, as opposed to intersectionality which examines the interaction between different identity categories. In disability research, intra-sectionality reveals that people within a single disability category (e.g., visual disabilities) are not homogeneous — they may differ in their language preferences, experiences, and needs based on factors such as severity, age of onset, cultural background, and co-occurring conditions. Recognizing intra-sectionality is important for avoiding the assumption that any single finding applies uniformly to all members of a disability community.
