Proximity Detection
Also known as: Proximity Sensing, Proximity-Based Localization
A method of determining a user's approximate location by measuring their closeness to known reference points, such as BLE beacons or Wi-Fi access points, based on signal strength. In accessible indoor navigation systems, proximity detection is used to localize users at specific points of interest within a building without requiring continuous position tracking. While less precise than fingerprint-based or computer-vision approaches, proximity detection is simpler to deploy, requires minimal infrastructure, and achieves 1-2 meter accuracy when beacons are strategically placed — sufficient for turn-by-turn indoor wayfinding for people with disabilities.
