Math Accessibility
Also known as: Mathematical Accessibility, STEM Accessibility
The practice of making mathematical content — including formulae, equations, graphs, and geometric representations — accessible to people with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairments. Mathematical notation poses unique accessibility challenges because it is inherently visual and two-dimensional, relying on spatial positioning (fractions, exponents, subscripts) that is difficult to convey through linear text or speech. Solutions include textual representations like LaTeX and MathML that can be read by screen readers and Braille displays, tactile graphics for charts and diagrams, sonification of mathematical relationships, and specialized editors like Lambda.
