Easy Language
Also known as: Easy-to-Read, Leichte Sprache, Easy Read, Einfache Sprache
A simplified form of written language designed to make information accessible to people with reading difficulties, including those with intellectual disabilities, prelingual hearing impairments, learning disabilities, low literacy, or limited proficiency in the language. Easy Language follows specific rules such as using short sentences, common vocabulary, active voice, avoiding metaphors and abbreviations, and often including explanatory images. It differs from plain language in that it targets an even simpler level of comprehension. Several European countries have established guidelines and standards for Easy Language, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognizes the right to accessible information formats.
