Design System

Also known as: Component Library, UI Kit

A collection of reusable components, patterns, guidelines, and assets that together define the visual language and interaction standards for a product or organization. Design systems typically include UI components, typography, color palettes, icons, illustrations, and documentation on how to use them. When design systems include diverse and accessible representations of people — such as avatars depicting users with disabilities — they can help normalize disability representation across an organization's products. Accessible design systems ensure all components meet accessibility standards and include guidance on proper usage of features like alt text, focus management, and semantic markup.
