CVAA

Also known as: Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act

The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, enacted in the United States in 2010 and updated in 2020, which requires major broadcast and cable networks to make online video content accessible through the provision of audio descriptions and closed captions. The CVAA extends accessibility requirements that previously applied only to television broadcasts to cover internet-based video content. Along with Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (which reference WCAG), the CVAA forms part of the legal framework mandating video accessibility in the United States. However, current regulations do not widely enforce requirements on non-public entities, meaning most user-generated and independent online video content remains inaccessible.
