Health-Related Impairment and Disability

Also known as: HIID, Health-Related Impairments and Disabilities

A category of impairments that arise as a consequence of health conditions, both chronic and acute, rather than from a traditionally defined disability. HIIDs are characterized by four properties: they are combinatorial (multiple low-intensity impairments that interact to create significant barriers), dynamic (varying in magnitude and extent over time), comorbid (secondary to a primary health condition), and socio-technical (compounded by factors like low income, low literacy, and fear of technology). HIIDs are often resistant to traditional accessibility solutions because the impairments are transitory and tied to the underlying health condition — treating the condition may be more effective than accommodating the resulting impairment directly.
