Bubble Cursor

Also known as: Dynamic Cursor, Area Cursor

An enhanced pointing technique that dynamically resizes the cursor's activation area to make target selection easier, particularly for users with motor impairments. The bubble cursor expands to encompass the nearest target, effectively enlarging the clickable region without changing the visual layout of the interface. Research has shown bubble cursors reduce pointing errors and improve selection speed for both users with and without disabilities. In adaptive assistive technology contexts, bubble cursors can respond to real-time changes in a user's motor control — expanding more when tremor or inaccuracy increases. The technique was introduced by Grossman and Balakrishnan (2005) and has been applied in accessibility tools like PINATA for users with Essential Tremors.
