Clear Face Mask

Also known as: Transparent Face Mask, Window Face Mask, See-Through Mask

A face covering that incorporates a transparent panel over the mouth area, allowing deaf and hard of hearing people to lip-read and observe facial expressions during conversation. Clear face masks emerged as an important accessibility solution during the COVID-19 pandemic, when standard opaque face mask mandates created severe communication barriers for DHH people who rely on visual cues from speakers' mouths and faces. Standard masks also hindered sign language communication, as facial expressions are grammatically significant in many sign languages. Despite their potential, clear face masks faced challenges with availability, fogging, and limited awareness among the general public. The lack of mention in official public health guidelines meant adoption remained low, illustrating how pandemic policies implemented without disability considerations can inadvertently exclude entire communities from basic social interaction.
