Disability Interaction
Also known as: DIX
A challenge-based approach and manifesto for creating a more inclusive world where disability can be an inspiration for innovation and creativity, and where inclusion is the norm. Proposed by Catherine Holloway and colleagues, Disability Interaction (DIX) places people with disabilities at the centre of all research and innovation, starting from listening to their lived experiences, creating partnerships that harness the creativity of the disabled community, and co-creating non-binary solutions that align with different environmental, social, and cultural contexts. DIX expands on approaches like Ability-Based Design and seeks to address not only technology innovations but the full ecosystem of disability innovation including policy and practice. In low-resource settings, DIX adopts a postcolonial lens where culture is treated as a dynamic construct, goals are shaped by community aspirations rather than predetermined agendas, and research methods preserve the societal voice of participants.
