Mixed-Ability Interaction
Also known as: Mixed-Ability Play, Mixed-Visual-Ability, Cross-Ability Interaction
Social interactions, activities, or collaborative experiences involving people with different levels of ability, such as sighted and visually impaired people playing a game together, or wheelchair users and ambulatory people sharing a physical activity. In the context of accessibility, mixed-ability interaction highlights the challenge of designing experiences that are engaging and equitable for all participants regardless of their abilities, rather than creating separate experiences for different groups. Research shows that many accessible technologies and games are designed for a single ability profile, which can inadvertently reinforce social segregation between disabled and non-disabled people.
