Auditory Interface
Also known as: Audio Interface, Aural Interface, Non-Visual Interface
A user interface that conveys information and accepts input primarily through sound rather than visual displays. Auditory interfaces range from simple screen reader output to complex auditory environments using spatial audio, earcons, speech synthesis, and sonification. In accessibility, auditory interfaces are essential for people who are blind or have low vision, but they also benefit sighted users in eyes-busy situations (driving, walking) or hands-busy contexts. A key design challenge is that auditory information is ephemeral and sequential — unlike visual displays where information persists and can be scanned spatially, audio must be processed in real-time as it flows past the listener, creating different navigation and memory demands.
