Service Learning

Also known as: Community-Based Learning

A teaching method that combines academic instruction with meaningful community service, allowing students to learn through hands-on participation that addresses real needs. In accessibility education, service learning often involves students working directly with people with disabilities or disability organizations on projects such as accessibility audits, assistive technology development, or accessible design consulting. Research shows that service learning in accessibility courses increases not only knowledge and confidence but also empathy and understanding of the lived experience of disability, outcomes that lectures alone may not achieve.
