Driving Cessation

Also known as: Driving Retirement, Giving Up Driving

The process by which a person stops driving a motor vehicle, either voluntarily or due to age-related decline in cognitive, visual, or physical abilities, medical conditions, or legal restrictions. Driving cessation disproportionately affects older adults and has significant consequences for independence, mental health, social participation, and quality of life, as personal transportation is often essential for accessing healthcare, social activities, and daily necessities. Research shows that racial and ethnic minorities in the United States cease driving at higher rates than White counterparts as they age. Autonomous vehicles and accessible transportation alternatives are seen as potential solutions for maintaining mobility after driving cessation.
