Mathematical Accessibility

Also known as: Math Accessibility, STEM Accessibility

The practice of making mathematical notation, formulas, equations, and quantitative content accessible to people with disabilities, particularly blind and low-vision users. Mathematical notation poses unique accessibility challenges because it is inherently visual and two-dimensional — fractions stack vertically, superscripts and subscripts indicate different operations, and spatial relationships carry meaning that is lost in linear text. Solutions include MathML markup for semantic representation, natural language generation for spoken descriptions, Nemeth Braille Code for tactile mathematics, and tools like MathJax for browser rendering. Mathematical accessibility is critical for inclusive STEM education, as inaccessible math content can exclude students with disabilities from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
