Adaptive Technology Resource Centre
Also known as: ATRC, Inclusive Design Research Centre
The Adaptive Technology Resource Centre (ATRC) was a research centre at the University of Toronto dedicated to developing inclusive information technology and promoting digital accessibility. Founded in the 1990s, the ATRC became one of the most influential accessibility research labs in the world, producing widely used open-source tools including AChecker (web accessibility evaluation), ATutor (accessible learning management system), and AContent (accessible content authoring). The centre was led by Jutta Treviranus and was instrumental in advancing inclusive design principles, particularly the idea that designing for the full range of human diversity benefits everyone. In 2010, the ATRC was renamed the Inclusive Design Research Centre (IDRC), reflecting its expanded focus on inclusive design beyond assistive technology. The IDRC continues to operate at OCAD University in Toronto.
