AccessForAll

Also known as: Access For All, AfA

AccessForAll is an accessibility framework originating from the IMS Global Learning Consortium and later standardized by ISO, based on the principle that accessibility is best achieved by matching content and environments to individual users' needs and preferences rather than creating a single "accessible" version. The framework consists of two complementary parts: a way to describe learners' personal needs and preferences (what modalities, display settings, and interaction methods they require), and a way to describe the accessibility properties of digital resources (what modalities content is available in, what adaptations exist). When a user accesses content, the system automatically delivers the version that best matches their profile. This approach moves beyond WCAG-style conformance toward personalized accessibility, recognizing that different users with different disabilities need different adaptations of the same content. AccessForAll has been implemented in specifications including IMS AccessForAll, ISO 24751, and has influenced accessible publishing standards including EPUB accessibility.
