Web Clutter
Also known as: Page Clutter, Visual Clutter
Non-essential elements on a web page that do not contribute to the primary content or user task, such as advertisements, decorative images, redundant navigation, social media widgets, and promotional banners. Web clutter disproportionately affects users of assistive technologies, particularly screen reader users, who must navigate through all page elements sequentially rather than visually scanning past irrelevant content. Reducing clutter through techniques like content simplification, skip navigation, and ARIA landmarks is a key strategy for improving web accessibility and usability for all users.
