Albinism
Also known as: Oculocutaneous Albinism, Ocular Albinism
A group of inherited conditions characterized by reduced or absent melanin pigment production, affecting the skin, hair, and eyes. Ocular effects commonly include reduced visual acuity, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), photophobia (light sensitivity), and reduced depth perception due to abnormal development of the visual pathways. Many people with albinism are classified as having low vision and may be particularly sensitive to bright lighting conditions and glare. Albinism affects approximately 1 in 20,000 people worldwide, with higher prevalence in some populations.
