Facial Recognition

Also known as: Face Recognition, FR

Facial recognition is a computer vision technology that identifies or verifies a person by analyzing and comparing patterns in their facial features from digital images or video. In accessibility contexts, facial recognition has significant potential to assist blind and low vision users by identifying people in their vicinity, reading facial expressions and emotions, and supporting social interactions. However, the technology raises important ethical concerns including algorithmic bias — particularly the documented higher error rates for people of color — as well as privacy implications and the risk of reinforcing surveillance and discrimination.
