Video Prompting

Also known as: Video-based prompting, Step-by-step video instruction

An instructional technique that uses short video clips to show a person with a developmental or intellectual disability how to complete individual steps of a task, presented one step at a time. Unlike video modeling (which shows the entire task performed continuously), video prompting breaks the task into discrete segments, allowing the learner to complete each step before viewing the next. Research has shown video prompting to be effective for teaching daily-living skills such as using an ATM, purchasing items, setting a table, and putting away groceries, and it is often preferred over paper-based picture instructions by people with developmental disabilities.
