Intellectual Disability
Also known as: ID, Cognitive Disability, Learning Disability (UK)
A disability characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem-solving) and adaptive behavior (conceptual, social, and practical skills) that originates before age 22. Intellectual disabilities exist on a spectrum from mild to profound. For digital accessibility, content should use plain language, simple sentence structures, and concrete rather than abstract concepts. Interfaces should minimize cognitive load, provide clear and consistent navigation, use recognizable icons with text labels, and allow ample time for task completion without pressure.
