Visuocentric Design
Also known as: Visual-First Design, Deaf-Centric Design
An approach to interface and content design that prioritizes visual communication and spatial organization, particularly for users of visual languages like sign languages. Visuocentric design recognizes that deaf and hard of hearing users process information visually rather than auditorily, and structures interfaces accordingly—using visual navigation, video-based content, spatial layouts that mirror signed language organization, and graphical rather than text-based search mechanisms. This approach contrasts with audio-centric or text-centric designs that assume users primarily process sequential, phonetically-based information.
