Executive Function

Also known as: Executive Functioning, Cognitive Control, Executive Control

A set of cognitive processes that enable goal-directed behavior, including planning, working memory, attention, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Executive functions allow individuals to organize, initiate, and monitor tasks in daily living. In accessibility contexts, executive function impacts how users navigate complex interfaces, manage multi-step processes, and recover from errors. Designs that reduce cognitive load, provide clear task sequencing, and support decision-making can accommodate users with executive function differences.
