Unmasking

Also known as: Autistic Unmasking

The process of reducing or stopping the suppression of autistic behaviors and traits that occurs during masking. Unmasking involves allowing oneself to express authentic autistic characteristics—such as stimming, direct communication styles, or atypical emotional expressions—rather than performing neurotypical behaviors. For many autistic individuals, unmasking represents a journey toward self-acceptance and reduced exhaustion, though it can also bring challenges when environments or relationships were built around a masked presentation. Research shows that supportive online spaces, including livestreaming communities, can provide opportunities for gradual unmasking in relatively low-risk contexts. Understanding unmasking is important for accessibility practitioners designing inclusive environments that welcome authentic autistic expression rather than requiring conformity to neurotypical norms.
