Auditory Map

Also known as: Audio Map, Sonic Map

An auditory map is an audio-based representation of geographical information designed to enable blind and visually impaired users to access and understand spatial environments without relying on vision. Auditory maps use combinations of speech, auditory icons (representative sounds like bird chirps for parks), earcons (abstract musical motifs), and spatial audio to convey map features including routes, points of interest, distances, and directions. They can be used passively to preview unfamiliar areas before travel or actively as navigation aids during wayfinding. Effective auditory map design balances information density with cognitive load and allows user customization of content and audio parameters.
