Screen Reader Plugin

Also known as: Add-on, Extension, Script, Add-in

A small piece of software that extends or modifies the functionality of a screen reader. Plugins allow users to customize their screen reader experience, make partially accessible applications more usable, add keyboard shortcuts, receive custom audio feedback, and interface with other technologies like OCR or braille displays. NVDA maintains an official plugin repository, while JAWS supports custom scripts. Developing plugins requires both programming skills and knowledge of screen reader APIs, which limits who can create them. Many plugins are community-developed and may lack ongoing maintenance.
