Ataxia
Also known as: Cerebellar Ataxia
A neurological condition characterized by impaired coordination and control of voluntary movements, typically caused by damage to the cerebellum or its connections. People with ataxia may experience unsteady gait, tremors, slurred speech, and difficulty with fine motor tasks like typing or using a mouse. Ataxia affects pointing accuracy, movement smoothness (increased "jerk"), and timing consistency—all of which impact computer use. Accessibility accommodations may include larger click targets, extended timeouts, input smoothing or filtering, and alternative input methods. Ataxia can be inherited (e.g., Friedreich ataxia, ataxia-telangiectasia) or acquired through stroke, multiple sclerosis, or other conditions.
