Optic atrophy

Also known as: Optic nerve atrophy

A condition involving damage to the optic nerve that results in partial or complete loss of vision. The optic nerve carries visual information from the eye to the brain, and when its fibers degenerate, visual acuity, color perception, and peripheral vision can all be affected. People with optic atrophy often experience reduced contrast sensitivity and may benefit from screen magnification, high-contrast displays, and adjustable font sizes. The condition can result from various causes including glaucoma, ischemia, inflammation, or hereditary factors.
