Speech Therapy

Also known as: Speech-Language Therapy, Speech Pathology, Speech-Language Intervention

Clinical intervention provided by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders. For speech sound disorders, effective treatment requires "frequent, high-intensity, individualized, and naturalistic" practice so children can develop new habits and skills. This typically involves clinic sessions supplemented by home practice directed by caregivers. Digital speech therapy tools, including serious games, can make home practice more engaging and reduce caregiver burden. Research shows that computerized and tablet-based speech therapy interventions can be as effective as traditional methods when designed appropriately.
