Narrative Route Description

Also known as: Verbal Route Guidance, Turn-by-Turn Narrative

A structured verbal representation of a travel route that guides users through sequential steps using spoken or text-based instructions. Effective narrative descriptions for blind travelers typically follow a consistent format: action to take, distance information, then landmark destination. Unlike visual maps, narrative descriptions rely on linguistic encoding of spatial relationships and require consistent terminology to reduce cognitive load. Research shows blind travelers benefit from egocentric cues (relative to the traveler), meaningful spatial chunks, and multi-sensory landmarks rather than purely visual references.
