Counterbalancing

Also known as: Latin Square Design

A research methodology technique used to control for order effects by systematically varying the sequence of conditions across participants. In accessibility research comparing multiple interface designs or assistive technology configurations, counterbalancing ensures that observed differences reflect actual treatment effects rather than practice, fatigue, or learning effects. Each condition appears equally often in each position across all participants.
